about

As listeners waited in anticipation after DJ Premier picked the anthem "Battle Anybody" as a Best of Hip Hop pic for 2013 Dawhud and Ace-One hyped their debut group project D&G with the tagline, "Something's Coming." The hype was met with critical praise as "The Scepter & The Sword" was released featuring the duo not chasing the "hit" that was their song, but building upon it and creating an album that played out like an epic document.

Released on vinyl and distributed by Fat Beats distribution, the album featured production from Dawhud and other golden era legends like Sadat X, Masta Ace, Rock (from Heltha Skeltha), Kokane and Pacewon. The duo were able to make their statement with these elder statesmen as equals and not be outshined by these legends in their own light. (a balancing act that many artists are not able to achieve when featuring artists)

As the initial dust from "The Scepter & The Sword" hadn't even settled, Dawhud came out of left field and dropped another full length project in the form of "Homecoming 97." Traditionally following a massive release like the D&G album, a roll out of continued promotion would be expected, but as marketing has shifted like the way music is consumed, we were presented with an unorthodox way of promotion: another album.

"Homecoming 97" is an album, a mixtape, a compilation and a solo project. With the art giving a nod to long discarded formats from the 80s & 90s, a VHS tape & Laserdisc, and paying homage to the iconic "Scarface" cover art, we see Dawhud in what appears to literally be an old school pic. The title and the imagery from the art set the tone and tell the listener exactly what to expect. This is one of the few instances when you can tell a book by it's cover.

The project starts with a voice mail telling Dawhud the who/what/when/where for Homecoming as a "Scarface" themed intro starts that is a nod to Mobb Deep's "G.O.D. pt 3." Track after track plays referencing throwback classics from Wu-Tang, Boot Camp, Tribe, Biggie and more as we're treated to new music and reimagining tracks from the recent D&G album and Vintage DOPE. The album is packaged as a mixtape as the tracks blend together while voice mails and drops from artists along with Dawhud's friends and teachers from high school paint the picture of him running for Homecoming King. Set to a "Scarface" backdrop in a fictitious school where characters from the movie are also running against him, listener's are treated to what Dawhud has described as a love letter to his high school memories.

Many times a quick follow up project or mixtape/street album lacks the themes and ability to have the same level of focus as a major album, but "Homecoming 97" almost serves as a pseudo prequel to the D&G project. Serving almost as the Genesis for Dawhud's path toward "King David" in D&G, the album sits nicely in his catalog of Stephen King like connecting projects.
